LARRY K. NELSON, 72, of Quimby, Iowa, passed away Friday evening, April 1, 2016 surrounded by his family in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 6th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Quimby United Methodist Church in Quimby, Iowa. Pastor Barb Dinelli will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Larry was born July 11, 1943 in Cherokee, Iowa to Albin and Eva (St. John) Nelson. He attended grade school at Meriden, the family moved to the Washta area and he attended Washta Community Schools, graduating from Quimby High School in 1961. He was married to Marilyn Hanson on June 28, 1964 at the Quimby Methodist Church. He started working for Simonsen's in 1963 and worked there for 45 years, retiring on March 31, 2008. He was currently working for O'Reillys delivering parts around the area. Larry was active in the Quimby community serving as mayor and was on the city council for many years, the Quimby Fire Dept. for 37 years, Cherokee Landfill Board, Quimby Golf Club Board, held several offices in his Church, was a youth group leader, and a former Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed golfing, working outside, making flower beds for Marilyn, spending time with family, grandkids, great grandkids and friends. He also enjoyed following the New York Yankees, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Iowa Hawkeyes and Cyclones, collecting Tasmanian Devils, golf balls and coffee cups.
He was preceded in death by his parents Albin & Eva Nelson, in laws Bernice and Manfred Hanson, brother-in-law Mervin Hanson and a niece Karen Askvig.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn and three children; Larry D. Nelson of Washta, Iowa; Bradley (Dedra) Nelson of Kingsley, Iowa; Dawn M. Nelson of Cherokee, Iowa; 6 grandchildren; Curtis Paulson, Kris Nelson and fiancé Elizabeth Lantz, Dakota (Sara) Nelson, Stetson Nelson, Hunter Nelson, Hope Elizabeth Chrislip; great grandchildren Jack & Myles Nelson; brother Dennis (Cindy) Nelson of Buckeye, Arizona; sister Patty Nelson of Quimby, Iowa; two brothers-in-law: Michael D. (Mary Ann) Hanson of Washta, Iowa; Marty (Marcia) Hanson of Strawberry Point, Iowa; sister-in-law Betty Hanson of Charleston, South Carolina; God-son Danny Volkert & family; several generations of nieces and nephews, and many friends.
