Obituary

LARRY M. SMALL SR., 75, of Cherokee, Iowa and formerly of rural Spirit Lake and Rembrandt, Iowa passed away Sunday evening, May 11, 2014 at Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Larry was born November 6, 1938 in Cherokee, Iowa to Ira and Iva (Stier) Small. He was raised on a farm in rural Peterson area, graduating from Brooke Consolidated High School in 1956. He attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa until enlisting in the U.S. Army in January of 1957. He was honorably discharged in May of 1958. Larry was married to Louella A. Piercy on October 17, 1958 at Port Jefferson, Long Island N.Y. He was later married to Wilma Jean (Coyer) Galvin on May 12, 1979 at Jackson, Minnesota. He had lived in Cherokee the past year and a half, prior to this in rural Spirit Lake, Iowa and was a longtime Rembrandt resident. He was a professional truck driver. He worked for several companies becoming an owner/operator leasing to Crouse Cartage Company at Carroll, Iowa for over 25 years but never really retired as he worked for the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office as a jailer and transport officer, as a farm hand in Minnesota and as volunteer at the Army Corp of Engineers camp ground in Coleman Texas during the winter.

He enjoyed fox hunting with friends, CB radios, was a fan of NASCAR, hunting rocks to polish, photography, camping in Texas for the winter and attending Crouse Cartage Company annual reunions.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Wilma, siblings and their spouses; Harold (Bud) Small and his wife Ruth, Donald Small and his wife Virginia, Letha (Small) Smith and her husband George, Iola (Small) Ross and her husband Maynard, brother-in-law Lowell Willis; son-in-law Scott Haskins, granddaughter Courtney Galvin, nephew Floyd (Swede) Smith and niece Cheryl (Ross) Morrow.

He is survived by his children, Larry M. Small Jr. and his wife Valerie of Cherokee, Iowa; Scott Galvin and his wife Norma of New Windsor, Illinois, Debra (Small) Haskins of Muscatine, Iowa; Shane Galvin and his wife Patty of Lake Park, Iowa; Lonny Small and his wife Teresa of Muscatine, Iowa; Stephan Galvin and his wife Connie of Florissant, Colorado; 19 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; one sister Gladys Willis of Yuba City, California; also many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life open house will be held on Thursday at the Spring Lake Yacht Club in Cherokee, Iowa from Noon until 7 p.m. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee is assisting the family with the arrangements. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com
