Obituary

LARRY  D.  WEEDE , 68, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Saturday morning, January 5, 2019 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center due to injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 27 th at 2 p.m. in the Washington High School Gymnasium at Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Cris Decious will officiate. Following the service his remains will be cremated as per his request. Visitation with the family present will be on Saturday, January 26 th from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. There will be masonic services on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to be made to the family for future designation in Larry's name. Larry was born March 7, 1950 at Bloomfield, Iowa to Gerald "Duff" & Hilda (Sawyer) Weede. He graduated from Davis County (Bloomfield) in 1968 having earned nine varsity letters in Football, Basketball, Track, and Baseball.  Also, while in high school, Larry was selected by the Future Business Leaders of America to represent them as Mr. Iowa FBLA in Washington, DC.  After graduating from high school, he attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri.  He played on the varsity Basketball team for one year.  Larry graduated from there in 1972 with a degree in Business Education.  While at NMSU, he met the love of his life, Diana Howerton. They were married on February 21, 1970 at Locust Hill, Missouri. Together they had four children, Robin, Steven, Brennan, and Ashley.

After graduating from NMSU, Larry took a job teaching Typing and English at Wilson Junior High in Cherokee, Iowa in 1972.  In 1974, he received his Master's in Secondary Education from NMSU and in 1978 became an Administrator for that same district.  Larry was awarded AEA's Principal of the Year in 1995 and the 2011 Principal of the Year by the Iowa Bandmasters Association. In 2013 Larry was chosen to be the Honorary Referee for the Tomahawk Relays. Larry also spent many summers teaching Driver's Education Courses. Larry spent a total of 43 years working for the Cherokee Community Schools before retiring in 2015.

While in college, but before he graduated, he was a Park Ranger in Sequoia National Park in Visalia, California. He was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and saved a boy's life.  As a result, he received the National Park Service Valor Award in 1972.

Larry coached many sports while at Cherokee.  In 1986, a team that he coached went to state in Baseball.  He officiated in Football, Basketball, Track, Baseball, Softball, and Volleyball. Larry spent several years helping coach the local CABA Team, The Roughriders as well as his children's Little League teams. As a result, of his long officiating career he was inducted into the Iowa Girls' Volleyball Hall of Fame as an official in 2016.

In his spare time Larry enjoyed attending Sioux City Musketeer Hockey games. He served as the organization's Booster Club President for a number of years. Larry also enjoyed attending numerous coffee groups around town. Larry rarely missed a community dinner in the area, and never missed a bake sale. He enjoyed following all of the local Cherokee Schools' activities. Upon his retirement Larry enjoyed working at Denny's Spring Lake Metals. Larry will be most remembered by his promise of ice cream or a Powerade if he didn't know a student's name.  He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities.


Larry was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Speculative Masonic Lodge, Abu-Bekr Shrine Temple, and the School Administrators of Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Willard Weede, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Glen and Gladys Howerton.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Diana; four children: Robin (Jeff) Pask of Marysville, CA; Steven (Kayla Stephenson) Weede of Urbandale, IA; Brennan (Mallory) Weede of Cherokee, IA; Ashley (Steve) Tapper of Dakota City, NE; 10 grandchildren: Oryn (Jill Mekalson), Alex and Isaac Weede; Marshall, Warner, and Benjamin Pask; Tiernan and Lochlainn Weede, Brooklynn Emery; Kinnick Tapper; his twin sister Lorrie (Allen) Giltner of Agency, IA; brother Charles (Val) Weede of University City, Missouri; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Don (Clara) Howerton of Liberty, MO; Kaye (Barry) Morris of Lee's Summit, MO. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
