Obituary

LaVon G. Grienke, 88, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Careage Hills in Cherokee.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 15th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Mr. Don Agostine will officiate. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be on Friday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. On line condolences may be sent to www.boothbyfuneral.com.

LaVon was born August 25, 1920 at Aurelia, Iowa to Harry and Ethel (Gilmore) Holmes. She attended school in Aurelia, Fort Dodge, Marathon, Truesdale and Storm Lake. She was married to Clarence Weiland on November 17, 1938 at Yankton, S.D. She was later married to Fred Edward Grienke. She had lived in Cherokee since 1951. She had worked in the canning factory in Storm Lake, Iowa and had worked at Cherokee Mental Health Institute for 19 years, retiring in 1977. She loved to read, play cards, listening to music and time spent with all her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred Grienke on September 24, 1986, a son Jackie Gene Weiland in 1940, son Harold Weiland in 1961, daughter Shirley Jean Grienke in 1958, a sister Hazel Krisco in 1992, a step-daughter Phyllis Lewis, a brother Raymond Holmes in 1938 and a son-in-law Joe Rupp in 2008

She is survived by four children: Sally Ann Johnson and her husband Mark of Bushnell, Nebraska; Suzanne G. Rupp of Cherokee, Iowa; Fred L. Grienke and his wife Kathy of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Robert D. Grienke of Cherokee, Iowa; one step-son James Grienke and his wife Blondina of Alta, Iowa; two step-daughters: Donna Donaldson of Marathon, Iowa; Betty Hamer Reed and her husband Gilbert of Council Bluffs, Iowa, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
