LEILA J. GOODBURN WOLFE, 88, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Monday afternoon, January 23, 2017 with family by her side.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 28th, at 11 a.m. from the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Rev. Cris Decious will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Leila June Carson was born on May 23, 1928 in Pilger, Nebraska, the daughter of Wayne and Esther Lerraine (Schneider) Carson. She lived in Pilger, Bloomfield, and Plainview, Nebraska and at age 14 moved to Cherokee and graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1945. She attended Wayne State College and graduated with a teaching degree. She taught school in Corwith and Cleghorn, Iowa. On June 27, 1948, she was married to Donald Goodburn. They farmed near Fielding and north of Larrabee before buying a farm in Afton Township. Leila worked alongside Don on the farm, was a wonderful homemaker, and raised four children.
Leila always had the coffee pot on with fresh baked goods for family and friends. Family was a big part of her life and she loved entertaining them. Don and Leila enjoyed camping, square dancing, and playing cards. They never missed an opportunity to attend their grandchildren's activities and sporting events. Later in life they wintered in Texas and Arizona enjoying their retirement.
After the death of Don in 1993, Leila married Dale Wolfe in 1998 and they enjoyed twelve years together before his passing in 2010.
She was a lifelong and active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Her memory will be cherished by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, brother Bill Carson, sister-in-law Leota (Tobias) Schindler, brother-in-law Elmer (Betty) Goodburn, brother-in-law Gerald Goodburn, sister-in-law Esther Green Wolfe and her two husbands Vernon and Dale, nephew Strider Schindler and niece Cindy Carson Gray.
She is survived by her three daughters: Nancy (Mike) Hauswald of Sioux Center, Iowa; Jean (Gene) Anderson of Cherokee, Iowa; Linda (Jim) Hughes of Cherokee, Iowa; one son Steve Goodburn of Cherokee, Iowa; 12 grandchildren: Jeff (Jenny) Graves, Scott Graves, Maggie (Jon) DeKoster, Kate (Nathan) Johnson, Kristen (Matt) Simonsen, Carrie (Mike) Smith, Mike (Stacy) Anderson, Jason (Heather) Anderson, Sara (Greg) Holmes, Molly (Eli) Paulsrud, Cory (Alyssa) Hughes, Rachel (Michael) Slininger; 33 great grandchildren; brother Robert (Aleene) Carson of Waco, Texas; sister-in-law Pat Carson of Duluth, Minnesota; sister-in-law Marge Goodburn of Cherokee, Iowa; four step-children: Bob (Bev) Wolfe of Grand Island, Nebraska; Dave (Marilyn) Wolfe of Medina, Illinois; Rick (Sue) Wolfe of Salina, Kansas; Vicki Hogencamp of Salina, Kansas; also several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
