Lois was born on a farm near Larrabee, Iowa on June 24, 1921 to Ole and Annie (Naylor) Skadeland. She attended Larrabee Schools, graduating in 1940. Lois was united in marriage to Edward Nelson on September 15, 1940 at Larrabee, Iowa. She was a homemaker, helping Eddie on their farm and to raising their five children.
She was an active member of the Larrabee Methodist Church and involved in her community. Many neighbors and friends fell victim to Lois and Eddie's pranks and jokes.
Lois spent lots of time, carefully tending to her beautiful garden. She thrilled at the sight of her brightly colored flowers, birds, and sunsets, often calling to her family to come and enjoy them too. Her vegetable garden nourished her family, frequently having to encourage her children to eat "at least one bite" before leaving the table! She enjoyed feeding and watching birds and she loved to bask in the sunshine. Lois also enjoyed reading, watching the Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs baseball teams, and listening to the radio. Lois loved her dogs, cats, chickens, peacocks, dairy cows and lambs and especially spending time with her family.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, her parents, two children Beverly Ann Emert and Marjie Ann Gauthier, two brothers Howard Skadeland and Victor Skadeland.
She is survived by three children, Gary Edward Nelson, Jimmie Ray (Suzie) Nelson, and Gail Linda (Chris)Van Scoyk; son-in-law, William Gauthier; seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, with another on the way. She was a bright spot in all their lives and will be sorely missed.
