LUCILLE J. WESTPHAL, 89, of Sturgis, South Dakota, formerly of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Wednesday evening, November 3, 2010 in the Sturgis Regional Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 8th at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Rev. Ethan Sayler will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday. Visitation will be on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Lucille was born on February 22, 1921 to Amil & Freda (Olson) Swanson in Buena Vista County, Iowa. She grew up on a farm in the Brooke area and attended Brooke Consolidated schools, graduating in 1939. Following graduation, she was united in marriage to Leon Westphal on October 29, 1939 in Aurelia, Iowa. She lived in Peterson for 20 years before moving to Cherokee in 1965. Lucille worked as an aide at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute and was an independent Avon representative for many years. She retired in 1980. She was a member of the Cherokee Memorial Presbyterian Church, Ladies Circle, United Presbyterian Women, and volunteered at Country Side Estates. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and eating ice cream.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leon on May 2, 2005, a son Dennis, sisters Edna, Doris, and Helen; brothers Herb and George.

She is survived by her two sons: Richard Westphal and his wife Cecelia of Arlington, Washington; Marlin Westphal and his wife Carolyn of Rapid City, South Dakota; a daughter-in-law Cathy Westphal of Stockton, California; sister Marvel Sterling of Livonia, Michigan; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren
