Margaret (Muggy) Anna Hill Rhodes was born May 29, 1923 in Cherokee, Iowa to John Mathewson and Mary Elizabeth (Minnie) Farmer Hill. Margaret graduated from Cherokee High School in 1941 and from Iowa State Teachers College in 1945 with a degree in business education. While a college Junior, she was elected homecoming queen. The following year, homecoming was cancelled as the boys who would have been on the football team were serving in WWII. She taught in Rockford and Marcus, Iowa for 1 ½ years. She also worked for Nomad Travel Agency for 15 years.
As a young girl, Muggy skied on wooden skis that strapped to her boots on the hills of the Cherokee Country Club golf course. She played the piano, tennis, roller skated and rode her bike all around town.
Margaret married Jack Ogilvy in December 1945 after Jack was discharged from the army two months prior. They resided in Cherokee, Iowa first in the Ogilvy family home and then in the Hill family home when son Jack was born in January 1947. After a portion of the Magnetic Springs Spa had been moved to Saratoga Street, Margaret and Jack and young Jack (Jock) moved into the duplex. In 1951, son Doug was born to the couple who shortly after moved to Park Ave.
While a member of the Presbyterian Church, P. E. O., and Cherokee Country Club, Muggy contributed to and supported her community by teaching Sunday school, being a boy scout den mother, and volunteering at the library. Throughout her life, she enjoyed gardening and was ahead of her time in being an organic gardener.
After the death of her first husband in 1987, Muggy married Warren Rhodes of Phoenix, AZ in 1993. They enjoyed summers in Cherokee and winters in Phoenix – playing lots of golf and bridge and traveling before "Dusty" died in 1997. Throughout Muggy's life, she remained active in golf, bridge clubs, gardening, Saturday morning coffee, and by always saying "yes" to life's adventures.
She is survived by her sons, John Howard Ogilvy (special friend Stephanie Schell) of O'Fallon, MO & Chatham, NJ., and Douglas Richard Ogilvy (Marina Muzzell) of Gustavus, AK and Durango, CO. Step children: Douglas (Sue) Rhodes, DeeAnn Eller, and Janet (Ferdnand) Brauch. Also surviving are four grandchildren: John Ogilvy (Kim), Jeffery Ogilvy (Lisa), Molly Ogilvy, and Shelli Ogilvy. Step grandchildren: John Rhodes, Jennifer Reichart, Lindsay Kavet, Stratton Rhodes. Seven Great Grandchildren: Sean, Jack, Trey, Gavin, William, Mila, and Colin Ogilvy, Natalie and Jack Rhodes.
Muggy's nieces and nephews and their children are: Margaret Short Daggett, Jessica Daggett, John Short, Michael and Ryan Short, Nancy Short (Robert) Blazer, Sandy Hill, Haley and McKayla Blake, Janie (Mike) Jones.
Muggy is preceded in death by her parents, John M. and Minnie Hill, husbands Jack Ogilvy and Warren Rhodes, sister Janet Mary Hill Short, brother-in-law Franklin F. Short, and grand-nephew Axel Forest Short.
Muggy's zest for life, generous spirit, and sense of humor will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.
