MARVIN W. PETERSON , 86, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Thursday evening, July 25, 2019 in the Cherokee Specialty Care.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 30 th , at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. Military rites will be held at the cemetery by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the Cherokee American Legion. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Tuesday. Visitation will be on Monday, from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Marvin was born January 11, 1933 to John and Mildred (Bell) Peterson on the family farm 3 miles north of Aurelia, Iowa. He attended Wilson High School in Cherokee and received his GED in 1952 while stationed in Seoul, Korea. He proudly served in the U. S. Air Force from 1951 until 1971, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant. He married his high school sweetheart Carol Anderson Werthman on June 15, 1967 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee.
When Marvin retired from the Air Force in 1971, the family moved back to Cherokee. In 1978 the couple built a new home on Oak Knoll Drive. In later years, they moved to Aurelia, Iowa and enjoyed living there for 18 years. In September of 2014, Marvin and Carol moved back to Cherokee to be closer to their family. He spent the last 1 ½ years at The Gardens Assisted Living where his door was always open for anyone to stop and visit.
After his time in the Air Force, he became the service manager for Bushlow Implement for several years, and later as the custodian for the Hy-Vee Warehouse for 14 years, retiring in February of 1995. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodworking, traveling, and wintering in Texas. He also enjoyed exercising at the Cherokee Wellness Center. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the V.F.W. and the American Legion at Aurelia, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mildred Peterson, father-in-law and mother-in-law Leonard and Mildred Anderson, his wife of 50 years Carol in November of 2017, his sisters and their spouses; Joyce (Kenny) Gould and Jane Ann (Dale) Wilmot; brothers-in-law Richard Anderson and Carl Gerald Anderson.
He is survived by his five children: Marvin K. "Butch" Peterson of Papillion, Nebraska and his special friend Sharon Paltz; Kathy (Mark) Stief of Larrabee, Iowa; Lori (Tim) LaFave of Cherokee, Iowa; Joe (Linda) Peterson of Cherokee, Iowa; Sheila (Doug) Alesch of Marcus, Iowa.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous great great grandchildren; sister-in-law Anita Anderson of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; several nieces, nephews and friends.
