Obituary

MAURINE M. POWELL, 84, of Quimby, Iowa, passed away Thursday evening, January 28, 2016 surrounded by her family at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 1st at 2 p.m. at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby, Iowa. Pastor Donald Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the church on Monday. Visitation will be on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. with the family present from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Maurine was born on November 14, 1931 on a farm near Ida Grove Iowa to Walter & Genneva (Thornhill) Boysen. She lived near Ida Grove until she was nine years old and then the family moved to a farm near Galva, Iowa. She attended and graduated from Galva Consolidated High School in 1949 as the Salutatorian of her class. She was married to William "Dave" Powell on November 1, 1953 at St. John's Lutheran Church Galva, Iowa. Maurine had worked at the Holstein Advance, Anthon Herald and the Cherokee Daily Times. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1978 until 1993, retiring as the Postmaster in Quimby, a position she had held for 8 years. She was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby. She enjoyed playing the piano, cooking, reading, coffee with her sisters-in-law and time spent with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law Harold and Darlene Jenkins, her husband on October 29, 2003, a son-in-law Tom Fick, an infant brother, brothers-in-law Joe Powell, George Powell, Kenneth Byerly, Carlos Moles, Robert Hirschman; sisters-in-law Mary Leriger, Rachael Hefner, Becky Saxen and Bertha Weiland.

She is survived by her four daughters: Kathy Fick of Quimby, Iowa; Karen Ebersole and husband Greg of Storm Lake, Iowa; Kandice Herron and husband Bob of Quimby, Iowa; Kelley Ellis and husband Mike of Meriden, Iowa; 7 grandchildren: Amber (Tim) Nelson, Andrew Fick, Brandon Ebersole, Casey Herron; Jason Ellis, Darin (Shelby) Ellis, and Kelsey Ellis (fiancé Brad Lund); 3 great grandchildren EmaLeigh Nelson, Logan and Kori Ellis; 5 sisters-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law: Viola Byerly of Cherokee; Alyce Hirschman of Cherokee; Elizabeth Moles of Cherokee; Mary Ann Reisinger of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Carol Peterson of Virginia; Sam Jenkins and wife Janet of Washta, Iowa; Eugene Weiland of Cherokee; also many nieces and nephews.
