MILDRED M. CASEY, 97, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Tuesday morning, April 19, 2016 in the Primrose Retirement Community at Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Paul Masters (New Horizon Presbyterian Church of Council Bluffs) will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery at Peterson, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Mildred was born on March 9, 1919 at rural Peterson, Iowa to W. Lee & Daisy (Corrington) Pennington. She grew up in the Peterson area, graduated from Brooke School in 1936, and then attended Buena Vista College for two years receiving her teaching degree. She taught school in Larrabee and Kiron, Iowa until her marriage to M. Wayne Casey on June 14, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple lived in Inglewood, California for six years and then returned to Peterson to farm in 1947. She became a farm wife and lived on the farm until she and Wayne retired and moved to Cherokee in 1976. She resided in Cherokee until 2014, when she moved to Council Bluffs to be closer to her family.
Mildred was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church and while living in Peterson, she was a member of the First Congregational Church. She was a 50 year member of Eastern Star, Past Matrons, Daughters of the Nile, Rushing Brooke, Extension Club, active 4-H member and leader while living on the farm, Wally Byam Caravan Club International, and Crochet Club. Mildred enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, cooking and baking, and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne on March 8, 2000, an infant daughter, a brother Harold (Marianna) Pennington, and a sister Margery (Carl) Potter.
She is survived by her four children: Dennis W. Casey and his wife Maria of Ankeny, Iowa; Gary L. Casey and his wife Sarah of Holland, Michigan; James M. Casey and his wife Linda of Spencer, Iowa; Mary Jo Bailey and her husband Terry of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
