PAUL HERMAN FASSLER, 88, of rural Quimby, Iowa, passed away Sunday morning, September 27, 2015 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 3rd, at 10:30 a.m. at the Quimby United Methodist Church. Rev. Barb Dinelli will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery. There will be military rites by Lyle W. Barnes #398 of the American Legion and L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.FW. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Paul was born on July 1, 1927 in Rock Township, Cherokee County, Iowa to Herman and Ellen (Baugh) Fassler. He grew up in Cherokee Co. attending country school and graduating from Quimby Consolidated School in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While in boot camp in Chicago he was a member of the Navy Choir. Paul (Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class) served on the USS Atherton Destroyer Escort and spent time on the island of Saipan in the Pacific.
Paul married Betty Jean Stevenson on February 8, 1948 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. They farmed in the Cleghorn and Larrabee areas for 20 years prior to purchasing land near Quimby. Betty and Paul continued farming until he retired at age 80. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, music, reading and all animals.
Paul was a member of the Quimby United Methodist Church and served in the Men's Club and on several boards. He was a charter member of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association, a member of Pork Producers, served as a Director of Cherokee Co. Rural Electric Co-Op and Iowa Lakes Electric Co-Op for 30 years, was a Director of Northwest Iowa Power Co.(LeMars) for eight years, and was a member of the American Legion for 68 years.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Barbara Irwin, infant brother Leland, sister-in-law LaVanche Huset, brothers-in-law Glenn Huset, Hubert Huyink, and John Irwin.
He is survived by his wife Betty of 67 years, two children Charles (Tina) Fassler of Palm Springs, CA; Paulette (Eugene) Van Auker of Lake City, MN and Anthem AZ; grandchildren Christopher, Michael and Nicholas Fassler, Heidi Cooper, Heather Greene, six great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Eloise Huyink of Cannon Falls, MN, JoAnn Kirwan of Santa Ana, CA, and brother-in-law Richard Kirwan.
