Obituary

ROBERT R. BERGERT, 71, of Sioux City, Iowa and former Cherokee resident, passed away Monday, August 2, 2010 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 7th, at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Bob Blair will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. There will be military rites at graveside by L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at the Boothby Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Bob was born March 21, 1939 in Cherokee County, Iowa to William and Elizabeth (Wallace) Bergert. he graduated from Larrabee High School in 1958. He attended Iowa Lakes Community College for one year. He was married to Mariann Griffith on October 8, 1961 at Peterson, Iowa. He served in the U. S. Army during the Cuban Crisis from December of 1961 until December of 1963. He had been a truck driver, worked at the dairy farm at M.H.I. until it closed, was a hired man for Dale Wester, worked on the railroad for a short time and was a small marine mechanic, retiring in 1991 due to health reasons. He was a member of the D.A.V. He enjoyed square dancing, fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Dean and David Bergert, a granddaughter Elizabeth Kneebone, a brother Donny and a brother in infancy, and a sister-in-law Karen Bergert.

He is survived by two daughters; Bobbi A. Kneebone and her husband Reed of Jefferson, South Dakota; Becky L. Lucas and her husband Jeff of Ann Arbor, Michigan; 3 grandchildren; Courtney and Caitlyn Lucas and Kasey Kneebone; two brothers; Richard Bergert and his wife Bette of Cherokee, Iowa; Kenneth Bergert of Red Oak, Iowa, several nieces and nephews.
