Robert Louis (Bob) was born in Cherokee on November 4, 1927 the second son of Eugene and Laura (Gilgaash) Grant.  He was raised in Cherokee and attended Cherokee schools graduating from Wilson High School in the Class of 1946.  In July, 1946 Bob joined the United States Marine Corp and served his country until being honorably discharged in 1948.  He remained in the Reserves and was called to duty in September, 1950 during the Korean Conflict and was again honorably discharged in 1952.  He was very proud of having been a Marine and always said, "once a Marine always a Marine."

Bob enjoyed people and this was evidenced in his life's work.  He owned and operated the Tomahawk Roller Rink for over 19 years.  He served as President of Public Loan and Russell Insurance for 20 years and while in this business he obtained his Real Estate Broker License which he maintained for 53 years.  In 1973 he went to work in the Therapeutic Recreation Department at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute and retired in November 1992 as Director of Therapeutic Recreation and Volunteer Services.  Then it was back to real estate for the next 16 years as an Associate Broker with Northwest Reality.

Bob was active in the community serving as President of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis.   He served on the Iowa Consumer Finance Association Board of Directors for 8 years and as its President for 2.  He was an American Legion member for 63 years.  He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and often said that the only time he had ever fainted was on the altar of the church on confirmation Sunday.

If you knew Bob you know that with him things were not just good they were always great and this is the way he lived his life with optimism and joy.  He enjoyed laughing and telling a good joke, going to the casino, having coffee with the guys, driving wherever for whatever, being a Republican and watching Fox News, reading, and eating.  But most of all he loved spending time with his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents Eugene and Laura Grant, brother Charles and his wife Florence Grant, his parents in-law Walter and Doreen Fuhrman, sister-in-law Janice Fuhrman, brother-in-law Gary Fuhrman, sister and brother-in-law Gayle and Tiny Messerole.  Best friend John Loughlin.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Jeannette and their children, Kim (Dean) Kohler and her sons Andy and Blake Brandt.  John (Erin) Grant and daughter Charley Jean.  6 step grandchildren.  His sons, Jim (Peggy) Grant, Steve Grant, Ron (Lori) Grant, Tom (Beth) Grant and their families. Also brother-in-law Gerald Fuhrman and many nieces, nephews and friends.
