ROBERT M. MAHNKE , 86, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Thursday morning, May 9, 2019 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 13 th , at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jonathan Riggert will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the Cherokee American Legion. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Monday. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Robert was born on June 18, 1932 at Correctionville, Iowa to Charles and Lucy (McKee) Mahnke. He was raised in the Correctionville area and graduated from Eastwood High School. He was married to Norma Noah on May 30, 1952 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 – 1954.
Bob worked several jobs before starting work for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He worked for the Iowa DOT for more than 36 years doing surveying and inspection of core samples. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., and had served on the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed camping, gardening, riding his bicycle around town and visiting his friends, but especially spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lucy Mahnke, parents-in-law Lawrence and Rosa Noah, daughter Julie Stines, brothers John and Gene Mahnke, sister Ruth Kruger, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Donna and Paul Bingham, brothers-in-law John Robinson Jr. and Adrian Goth, and a nephew Gene Kruger.
He is survived by his wife Norma Mahnke of Cherokee, Iowa; daughter Kathy (Rick) Stines of Cleghorn, Iowa; son Steven Mahnke of Cherokee, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Nicholas Stines of Cherokee, Iowa; Scott (Maggie) Stines of Webster City, Iowa; Kimberly Stines of Medford, Wisconsin; Kayla Stines of Correctionville, Iowa; Rob Stines (fiancé Megan) of Cherokee, Iowa; Morgan (Jake) Gravenish of Cherokee, Iowa; Seth Mahnke (fiancé Kassie) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 14 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Lois Goth of Cherokee, Iowa; brother-in-law Lawrence (Jan) Noah of Brandon, South Dakota; also many nieces, nephews and friends.
