Obituary

RONALD D.  SCHUMANN , 80, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away peacefully, Friday morning, October 5, 2018 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, October 7 th at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jon Riggert will officiate. Visitation and a time of sharing memories will follow the service with the family present until 4 p.m. at the funeral home. It was Ron's wish to be cremated and burial will be at a later date. Ronald was born March 11, 1938 at Lucas, Iowa to William & Cleo (Hall) Schumann. He attended Country Freedom School and graduated from Derby High School in 1956. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers serving from 1961 til 1963 as an E-4. Ron was married to Loretta Nelson on November 6, 1964 at Bellevue, Nebraska. Over the years he had worked construction, drove truck, was the Manager of Thermogas in Cherokee for many years and had also worked at Holzhauer's, retiring in 2015.

Ron was a member of the American Legion, had been President of the Little League, and had served on the City Council in Pleasantville, Iowa. He loved to dance, enjoyed 3-wheel motorcycling, corvettes, collecting John Wayne Memorabilia, reading, watching westerns on TV, deer hunting, fishing and boating at Red Rock Dam, mushroom hunting, and he especially liked spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Ronnie Schumann, brother Bill Schumann, nephew Terry Schumann, parents-in-law Emmett & Rena Waul, and a sister-in-law Carmen Schumann.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Loretta; four children: Jeanie (Ray) Murphy of Urbandale, Iowa; Barb Lerdal of Thornton, Iowa; Larry (Jennifer) Schumann of Madrid, Iowa; Bill (Angela) Schumann of Cherokee, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; one brother and one sister: Lee (Dorothy) Schumann of Chariton, Iowa; Dorothy (Dave) Harger of Sun City, Arizona; a sister-in-law: Florence (Duane) Taylor of Wickenburg, Arizona.
