Obituary

ROY E. WESTER, 87, of rural Paullina, Iowa, passed away Tuesday morning, May 4, 2010 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 8th, at 2 p.m. at the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church, rural Meriden, Iowa. Rev. Clint Hogrefe will officiate and burial will be in the Liberty Township Cemetery, rural Meriden, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. On line condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Roy was born on June 3, 1922 at the family home near Cleghorn, Iowa to Elmer & Mabel (Anderson) Wester. He attended Liberty #3 Country School and assisted his father on the farm. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands and was on board the US Missouri when the peace treaty with Japan was signed. He received several medals including the Purple Heart and was discharged in January of 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. He began farming near Paullina soon after returning from the war. He was married to Elsie Reimers on February 14, 1953 at the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church. Roy was a creative engineer, building and finding ways to improve his farm equipment. Even after retiring, Roy still enjoyed spending time around the farm. He was a longtime member and trustee of the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church. Roy and Elsie enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states, Europe and Africa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Vernon (and wife Ruby), and brother-in-law Burton Lundell.

He is survived by his wife Elsie and his four children: Loren (Darla) Wester of Meriden, Iowa; Colleen (Paul) Erdmann of Chandler, Arizona; Carol (Gerald) Smith of Holstein, Iowa; Lowell Wester of Bellingham, Washington; 8 grandchildren: Lara (David) Jimerson, Ward Wester, Chris Erdmann, Drew Erdmann, Nick (Becky) Erdmann, Jenn (Kyle) Butler, Leighton (Sarah) Smith and Janel Smith; 2 great grandchildren: Savannah Butler and Henry Smith; brothers and sisters: Eleanor Lundell of Paullina, Iowa; Dale (Pat) Wester of Cherokee, Iowa; Lorraine (Robert) Mortenson of Cherokee, Iowa; Merle (Eleda) Wester of Cherokee, Iowa; Evelyn (Karl) Kludas of Cherokee, Iowa; Jeanette (Larry) Johnson of Meriden, Iowa; also many nieces and nephews.
