Obituary

RUSSELL G. PARKS, 100, of Cherokee, Iowa and former long time Larrabee resident passed away Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 27th at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Judd Stover will officiate. Burial will be in the Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral on Tuesday. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday at the Boothby Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneeral.com

Russell was born August 14, 1909 in a log house in Effington County, Illinois to Grover and Nora (Dowds) Parks. He was married to Ruth Gould on January 4, 1933 in Larrabee, Iowa. He started working highway construction in 1933 for $4.00 a day. In 1935 hew purchased his own truck and he and his wife operated their own trucking business for 25 years. The couple lived in Larrabee since 1933. Russell entered the Cherokee Villa in 2002. Russell worked for the Cherokee County Maintenance Department as a maintainer driver for 20 years until he retired. He then continued to work for the county for 10 more years as a mower operator. Many people were grateful to him for pulling them out of ditches, giving them rides on the maintainer and helping people move with his truck. He was a member of the Larrabee United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Ruth on June 14, 2003, a brother Charles Parks, sister Erma Vogel; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Leo Kelly, Harold and Pauline Gould, Clifford & Halcyon Gould, Galen Gould, Kenneth and Joyce Gould, Bernice Mercer.

He is survived by a sister Frances Brown of St. Louis, Missouri; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Hazel Kelly and Laurine Lundell of Cherokee, Iowa; Vivian Gould of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Mary Parks of Los Angeles, California; Marvin Gould and his wife Frances of Gregory, South Dakota, also several nieces and nephews.
