RUTH EVELYN MALCOM , 101, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Friday morning, May 29, 2015 in the Good Samaritan Society at Holstein, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 2nd, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Visitation will be on Monday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Evelyn was born on June 3, 1913 at Magnolia, Iowa to Andrew & Nettie (Mark) Garrison. She attended country school in Pierson and Cherokee graduating in 1932. She then had two years of Normal Training. Evelyn was married to Hilton A. "Shorty" Malcom on April 21, 1935 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. She had been a resident of Cherokee since 1929 except for three years she lived in Gary, Indiana during WW II. She was a housewife and homemaker. She was one of the first teachers for the Cherokee County Training Center, teaching craftwork. Evelyn was hostess for the Boothby Funeral Home from Oct. of 1969 until Dec. of 1981. She was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, belonged to U.M.W. and had served as the president for 4 years. She taught Sunday School and was involved in the Young Peoples Group and also liked working with the 4-H kids. She enjoyed embroidery, quilting, and helping other people with their craftwork.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Hilton on July 19, 1971, a son and daughter-in-law Donald & Addie Malcom, son-in-law Ralph Reinert, grandson Nathan Eugene Johnston, two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her three daughters: Judy (Fred) Johnston of Cleghorn, Iowa; Janet Reinert of Fort Worth, Texas; Janice (Steve) Helleloid of Bellevue, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren.
