SHIRLEY J. FOGLEMAN, 93, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Friday evening, January 16, 2015 at her home in Cherokee.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 20th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery at Quimby, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Shirley June was born on June 14, 1921 in Quimby, Iowa, the daughter of George (Riley) Wheelock and Hazel (Morgan) Wheelock. She attended Quimby Consolidated School and graduated in 1938. She was united in marriage to Walter W. Hempel in 1938 and they farmed the Hempel Century farm north of Quimby. They were blessed with three sons: Gary, Larry, and Dennis.
Walter died in January of 1972. Shirley later was married to Allen Dwire, who died in a traffic accident six months later. In 1977 she was united in marriage to Merlin Dale Fogleman.
Shirley had worked for HyVee, Central Trust Bank, and for Mid-Sioux, retiring in 1982. She loved to travel, read, play cards, golf, and spend time on the computer. Dale and Shirley spent several winters in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Her pride and joy was her family and spending time and keeping up with their activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Gary Hempel, her husbands, and brother Cecil Hammond.
She is survived by two sons: Larry (Sharon) Hempel of Quimby, Iowa; Dennis Hempel of Cherokee, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Stacey Hempel of Van Nuys, California; Steve (Gail) Hempel of Algona, Iowa; Chris (Jen) Hempel of Ankeny, Iowa; Lauren (Brett) Rohweder of Ankeny, Iowa; Melanie Rupp of Clive, Iowa; Joyana (Jim) Pilquist of Clive, Iowa; Bethany Hempel of Des Moines, Iowa; eleven great grandchildren: Nicole Rupp of Vermillion, South Dakota and Chloe Disky of Clive, Iowa; Tanner, Carter, and Malerie Rohweder of Ankeny, Iowa; Lucas and Carson Hempel of Ankeny, Iowa; Nathyn and Nolyn Hempel of Algona, Iowa; A.J. and Maddie Pilquist of Clive, Iowa; her daughter-in-law: Juanita Hempel of Cherokee, Iowa; her sister Zelda Pechota of Ormand Beach, Florida; and extended Dwire and Fogleman families and other relatives and friends.
