Obituary

STANLEY  L.  OSWALD , 92, of rural Cleghorn, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Private family burial will be held on Saturday morning April 24th at the Liberty Township Cemetery, rural Meriden, Iowa.  Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com .

Stanley was born on July 17, 1928 to Roy and Mary (Blough) Oswald at Cherokee County, Iowa.  He attended Cleghorn Schools. He was married to Sarah "Sally" Haller on March 23, 1952 at Sioux City, Iowa.

Stanley started helping on the farm at a young age and for 80 years could be found nearly every day doing something around the farm.  A fan of mechanization, Stanley took to driving his Uncle Jim's late 1920's model Farmall Regular tractor as soon as he was big enough to crank start the engine, thus he never learned to farm with horses.  Years later he restored that tractor.  From the late 1940's to the middle 1990's he was the principal combine operator on the farm.  When his son Tom bought a new combine with GPS in 1996, he loved to call the yield monitor  "The Stargazer".  In the fall of 2016, at age 88, he hauled most of the harvest away from the combine to bins or elevators pulling two 650 bushel wagons at a time with a 200 horsepower tractor.   Stanley retired from most farm work when sidelined by a stroke in December 2016.

He had served on the Farmers Coop of Cleghorn and Cherokee elevator board and as a Liberty Township trustee.  Years later, he designed and built a directory sign at Liberty Township Cemetery as his way to support the final resting place of his many relatives and neighbors buried there.

Stanley was a lifelong learner, even using the computer to enjoy and learn about his family's genealogy and sharing it with others. He liked spending time with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sally Oswald in 2019, his parents Roy and Mary Oswald, father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Sarah Haller, sister and brother-in-law Irene and Carroll Kuehn; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mary Lou and John Haller, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert  and Pauline Meloy; brother-in-law Wallace Bergstrom.

He is survived by his four children: Julie (Bruce) Hiller of Cherokee, Iowa; Thomas (Susanne) Oswald of Cleghorn, Iowa; Breta (William) Skinner of Berthoud, Colorado; James (Stephanie) Oswald of Remsen, Iowa; three grandchildren: Jackson Oswald of Ames, Iowa, Drake and Jade Oswald of Remsen, Iowa; sister-in-law Phyllis Bergstrom of Whiting, Iowa; brother-in-law Thomas (Mary Sue) Haller of Ames, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
