VERA A. STIENEKE, 94, of rural Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Thursday evening, November 6, 2014 in the Sunset Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center at Aurelia, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 12th, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. Pastor Tom Lewis will officiate and burial will be in the Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Vera was born on December 7, 1919 in rural Brookings, South Dakota to Frank & Louise (Luetkeman) Mohror. The family moved to Afton Township, Cherokee County, Iowa in 1923. She attended country school in Brooke Township graduating from Brooke High School in 1937. After graduation she lived in various homes caring for their families. She was married to Roy W. Stieneke on December 1, 1940 at Correctionville, Iowa. She and her husband lived in rural Aurelia, Iowa until 1959, when they moved to the present farm east of Cherokee. Vera was a very caring housewife and loving mother. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Afton Community Club, Pal Club, various bridge clubs and Women's Homemakers. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, baking, visiting with family and friends and was a faithful volunteer at the Cherokee Work Activity Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roy on November 13, 2004, two granddaughters Dawn Renae Stieneke on February 14, 1966 and Brenda Jean Stieneke on August 21, 1969, three sisters Dorothy (John) Hartwig, Harriet Zarr and Marcella (Bud) Stout.
She is survived by her two children: Fred (Diana) Stieneke of Cherokee, Iowa; Audrey Stieneke of Cherokee, Iowa; two grandchildren: Denise Stieneke of Volin, South Dakota and special friend Dan Nysven; Dana Stieneke of Cherokee, Iowa and fiance Melissa Bock; one sister Phyllis (Rex) Boatman of Waterloo, Iowa; brother-in-law Bud Zarr of Aurelia, Iowa; also several nieces and nephews.
