VERLAND J. ANDERSON, 89, of Sioux City, Iowa and originally from the Cherokee area, passed away Friday, November 25, 2016 at his residence in Sioux City.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 9th, at 1:30 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Cris Decious will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 1:15 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial of the cremains will be in the Meriden Cemetery at Meriden, Iowa. There will be no visitation. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements. Verland was born on his grandfather Oscar Anderson's farm in rural Cherokee, County on March 21, 1927 to Joseph and Ruth (Johnson) Anderson. He attended Larrabee consolidated elementary and high school. He left school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on January 10, 1945, despite being of insufficient age. He completed his eight weeks basic training at Great Lakes Naval training center, and subsequently signal school and armed guard compool training. He was then transferred to Treasure Island, California where he served as an instructor in the color guard with a rank of 3rd class petty officer. He also served as a quartermaster on the USS Toucan in the pacific.
After his discharge, he returned to Cherokee County and was united in marriage to Georgia Louise Heaney on May 17, 1947. To this union, one child, Paul Steven Anderson was born.
He worked several jobs after his discharge from the Navy, including farming, aid at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute, and town marshal of Meriden, Iowa. In 1956 he became the deputy sheriff, of Cherokee County, Iowa. A position he held until 1962 when he moved to Sioux City, Iowa to become an investigator and claims adjuster for North Central Adjustment Company, until his retirement in 1994.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Ruth, his wife Georgia; brothers Lawrence, Robert, and Dale Arthur.
He is survived by his son: Dr. P. Steven Anderson and his wife Lynette of Yankton, South Dakota; granddaughter Heather and her husband Tim Budde of Buffalo, Minnesota; grandson Brent Anderson of Yankton, South Dakota; great grandchildren Taylor, Mitchell, Hannah, and Alexander Budde; two brothers: Duane (Joyce) Anderson of Alta, Iowa; Jim Anderson of Newell, Iowa; three sisters: Millette Gripp of Prescott, Arizona; Delores Smith of Storm Lake, Iowa; Evelyn Boron of Storm Lake, Iowa; sister-in-law: Carolyn Anderson of Spencer, Iowa.
