Obituary

VERNON L. BAINBRIDGE, 88, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Sunday morning, May 16, 2010 at Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 19th, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. there will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Wednesday. There will be military rites at the cemetery by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Online condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Vernon was born July 28, 1921 in the Kingsley area to Ray and Emma (Woods) Bainbridge. He attended school in Kingsley where he graduated in 1939. He sheared a lot of sheep in his younger years in Cherokee County. His family did custom baling. He showed a sixth place calf at the International Cattle Show in Chicago as a young man in 4-H. He was married to Mildred Ferris on January 7, 1947 at Elk Point, South Dakota. He farmed for many years until retiring due to poor eye sight and moved to Kingsley. He also loaded lots of gravel out of his own gravel pit north of Quimby. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army and received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and 5 battlefield stars. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the V.F.W. and at one time several square dance clubs. He enjoyed square dancing, bowling with his son Rodney, fishing in Minnesota and playing cards. He had lived in Cherokee for many years, prior to this on a farm near Quimby, Iowa. Vernon loved his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren and had many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Judy Law, great grandson Jerry Mote, brother Doris Ray Bainbridge and a sister Lainys Bainbridge.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, and three children; Rodney Bainbridge and his wife Priscilla of Cherokee, Iowa. Roger "Scrapper" Bainbridge and his wife Bonnie of Cherokee, Iowa; Beth Mote and her husband Tom of Dupo, Illinois; 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; a sister Beulah Spink of Kingsley, Iowa, many nieces and nephews.
