Vernon "Bingo" Peterson, 99, of Cherokee, Iowa passed on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Sunset Knoll Nursing Home in Aurelia, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 6th, at 10:30 a.m. from the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Rev. Tom Petersen will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Aurelia, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Monday. Visitation will be on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. He was born on July 7, 1914 in Aurelia, Iowa to Gust and Anna (Lundell) Peterson. Vernon graduated from Aurelia High School in 1931. He married Mabel Becker on March 18, 1939 at Aurelia, Iowa.
Vernon farmed in the Aurelia area until 1969. He was active in the Cherokee County Farm Bureau and served at the County Chairman for 5 years. He was a lifetime member of the Aurelia Kiwanis Club and continued to attend until illness kept him away. For a period of time, he was a field representative for Producers Livestock Co. in Sioux City. After retiring from farming, Vernon worked part time for the Cherokee County Assessors office for several years. Vernon later ran for the County Assessor position for Cherokee County and was elected to that office and held that office for several years. He was on the boards of The Farmers National Bank of Aurelia; the Aurelia Peoples Telephone Company; was an original board member of The Sunset Knoll Nursing Home in Aurelia and was a Scout Master of the Aurelia Boy Scouts Troop 111. He helped build the swimming pool in Aurelia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mabel on January 26, 2000, three brothers Ralph, Walter & Alvin Peterson.
Vernon is survived by sons Douglas (Pauline) Peterson of Des Moines, Iowa; Keith Peterson of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Daniel (Julie) Peterson of Kirksville, Missouri; and by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
