Obituary

Vernon G. VanRoekel, 73, of Cherokee, passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 at Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 9th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. Burial will be at Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Vernon was born February 21, 1940 at Hull, Iowa to Jake and Henrietta (VanVorst) VanRoekel. He attended country school near Hull, Iowa. He was married to Lori DeVos on June 24, 1960 at Luverne, Minnesota. He was later married to Margie Tarbill on September 24, 1993 at Gladstone, Missouri. He had worked at Sioux Center Creamery for a few years and then Felten's Dairy Farms near Aurelia for 14 years. He had also worked at Sanitary Services for 2 years, KCI Airport for 1 year, Western Auto for 16 years, Allied Job Service for 7 years and K.C. Booth for 6 years, retiring in 2008. He had lived most of his married life in the Aurelia, Iowa and Kansas City, Missouri area. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church. He was a member of the CB club. He enjoyed going to auctions and swap meets, collecting John Deere memorabilia, and time spent with kids, grandkids and great grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Margie on December 19, 2009, his daughter Brenda Joines and a step-son-in-law Chet Feuerborn.

He is survived by his five children; Sue (Todd) Driesen of Cherokee, Iowa; Kevin (Kris) VanRoekel of Cherokee, Iowa; Twila VanRoekel of Omaha, Nebraska; Missy VanRoekel of Cherokee; Karla (Ritchie) Brown of Cherokee; six step-children; Beth Tarbill of Cherokee, Iowa, Steve (Deb) Tarbill of Aurelia, Iowa; Geneva Feuerborn of Cherokee, Iowa , Shelly (Randy) Moore of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Christie (Steve) Tharp of Kansas City, Missouri; Molly (Erik) Jones of Kansas City, Missouri; 26 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, a sister Ella (Marv) Hoogendoorns of Rock Valley, Iowa.
