Obituary

WILLIAM DEAN MONGAN, 90 , of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away on Sunday morning, April 30, 2023 at Careage Hills Nursing Home in Cherokee, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Mark Leeds will officiate. Military rites will be performed by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 and the Cherokee American Legion. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Online condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com .

Dean was born on May 15, 1932 to Walton and Ruby (Warner) Mongan in Afton Township, Cherokee County, Iowa. He attended Cherokee and Marcus Schools, graduating from Marcus High School in 1952. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in October 1952. He was a staff sergeant. He was united in marriage to Norma Gerjets on February 14, 1961 at Cherokee, Iowa.

Dean worked with his uncle, Elliot Mongan, for Mongan Painting then went on to work at Heg Painting. He most recently worked at Cherokee State Bank as a custodian until his retirement in 2017.

He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Dean enjoyed his work, going fishing, camping, and being outside. He liked to watch old westerns on t.v. and watching Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas City Chiefs football. He loved going to his kids and grandkids activities. Dean liked to go bowling and working in the garden. He always had a smile on his face and enjoyed visiting with people he met.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Don and Charlene Mongan, brother, Bob Mongan, and sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Ed Albaugh.

Dean is survived by his wife, Norma of Cherokee, Iowa; four sons, Jim (Veronica) Mongan of Cherokee, Iowa, Tom (Kelley) Mongan of Cherokee, Iowa, Tim (Larinda) Mongan of Ankeny, Iowa and Dan (Casey) Mongan; 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren with one more on the way; also several nieces and nephews.
