WINOGENE "WINKY" E. CAIN, 83, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 26, 2015 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 29th at 11 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. Pastor Tom Lewis will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. It was Wingogene's wish to be cremated. Winky was born on July 27, 1931 at Sioux City, Iowa to Wilbur & Thelma (Collier) Bennett. She attended Woodrow Wilson Jr. High and Central High School. She later obtained her GED from North Idaho Community College in Coeur D Alene, Idaho. She was married to Joe Tucker Cain on December 6, 1952 in Coeur D Alene at the Hitching Post Chapel. She had lived in Cherokee since 1990, prior to this in Spirit Lake, ID from 1977 until 1990. She traveled with her husband who was in the military, traveling all over the United States; being stationed at several Air Force Bases. She owned and operated a laundromat in San Antonio, TX. She had a heart for working with youth and ran an arcade and teen club while living in Spirit Lake, ID. She cooked at Head Start in Spirit Lake, ID from 1983 until 1987 and loved the kids. They loved her and affectionately called her "Cooker." She worked as a cook at Spirit Mountain Treatment Center for young girls from 1987 until 1990. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cherokee and a member of the WOW (Wild Old Women) lunch club. She had been a Sunday School teacher at Midwest Christian Children's Home. She owned Cains Ceramics and share her talent with people in nursing homes. Winky used her experience with cancer to educate students at local schools on the danger of smoking.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joe T. Cain on January 25, 2002, her parents Wilbur and Thelma, her parents-in-law Joe Ben and Bessie Cain, a son Randall in infancy and son Darrel Roger Bird on September 27, 2012, her siblings Harry Putnam, Wilda Putnam and Kenneth Watters.
She is survived by her children; Ronald (Karen) Obe of Sioux Falls, SD, Joe Ben (Sheila) Cain II of Goodyear, AZ, Susan (David) Harkins of Cherokee, IA, Derek (Jennifer) Cain of Spokane, WA, Gilbert Bruce (Carla) Cain of Hazleton, PA, David (Joey) Cain of Charles City, IA, 24 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and many others of her extended family who would call her Mom and Grandma.
